Bill Cook and Paul Tine, both, helped me quickly helped me get the facts on Property Tax Legislation. The real measure of any politician is availability to his constituents on any matter being a concern.

I congratulate Bill on his victory. Let's get NC going once more / let's reconsider the Fracking Danger. Remember, any water coming from the mountains to the sea in the Pamlico River Basin passes in front of my house and beside Washington. It is our river where fracking and coal ash dumping kill aquaculture.

I was at both Bath and went over to Havelock during the day to see a friend there. At the Ruritan Club in Bath is was a convivial atmosphere. Over across at the Visitors Center in Havelock, it was somewhat strained, but still congenial.

I am so glad to vote at Bath because our line was short and steady where the far more populated Havelock lines were long at supper time. Craven County is far more populated than Beaufort so I am sure the observation holds about large numbers vs. less.

The best thing about Bath was how abject opponents spoke and conversed in intelligent terms. One lady tried to start a row with me, but soon we were talking amiably and she has good points about future issue which concern all of us here.

I surmise it was a good day for all and now ~~~ let's get down to tackling our issues of Jail and Belhaven Hospital for the benefit of all ~~~ rather than constant fighting and fussing.

If you would be smart enough to realize that people and tax money make the basis for politics, it would be much wiser in my view.

The politics are divisive because people don't realize we pay for the mess as a starting point. I am one who believes you take care of yourself and your family first / friends and truly needy folks next / fail to support porch sitters who refuse to do anything except suck the welfare tit.

The other end of the equation is the rich and corps who are being so favored now we have 1% owning about 80 +/-% of all money flowing in the US system of finance. If they were not GREEDY, then more money is available.

Jesus had it right: "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil."

The fall of Rome came when the rich bathed and drank constantly / slaves got tired of their abuse / the general public only wanted entertainment / they had a mercenary army that was in it for the money and changed sides to "who is going to win."

You can't buy freedom nor can you have it without all wanting to participate in society and work for all to have a better lifestyle.

The full story, as I understand it, says she was tested / found to now have it / therefore NO RISK to others.

It is a dangerous disease, no doubt. It is passed by bodily fluids and contact with one having it in their system and dying. NO ONE at Emory has died and progress is being made in research. Emory is some 5 miles from the CDC and WHO. The Carter Center is also in Atlanta and they a focusing on basic health issues like drinking water and parasites.

All three organizations are smart and genuine. If you want to help cure Ebola, contact the Carter Center and offer to support them as they spread cures all over as soon as they are available.

The worst cause of most human disease is overpopulation because we "CAN'T HELP OURSELVES" and don't protect our women from pregnancy and disease to their small children. Either we control population or nature does it in cruel fashions.

Your post is typical hysteria over a disease WHICH IS NEVER PASSED UNLESS IT IS FULL BLOWN AND SOMEONE COMES IN CONTACT WITH YOUR BODY FLUIDS!

I graduated Emory University in 1967. They just did a full story in our alumni magazine.

I'm seeing a change in Republican surface stuff to "compassion." The first time I see a Conservative being generous, I will reconsider my position ~~~ until then, NADA!

This just tells me Republicans fear the voters of NC in this election. Sorry about that!

I have come here from Nash County where we USED TO HAVE a corrupted Sheriff taking bribe money from the bootleggers and drug dealers. Fortunately, we don't have such here and should not from either candidate.

People here don't quite realize how lucky we are to live in a place where people can "agree to disagree"---with a heart for the downtrodden. Here in Bath, there are more fund-raising suppers and events to help the hurting than any place I have ever known.

Beaufort County is BEAUTIFUL in my view. May we all keep smiling and waving to one another as we pass on the streets of "good old fashioned fellowship!"

Let's just slow down a bit on the Open Carry stuff, though!!!!

This Sheriff Campaign is degenerating quickly into a personality attack. That's NOT good, in my view.

I was at the meeting when both spoke and presented themselves. In my view, these are BOTH good men wishing to be the Custodians of Peace and Law. It's hard for me to make a choice, but when the curtain closes behind me, I will say a little prayer and it will be: "May the best man win AND fulfill his promises to me!

I appreciate the way BCN DOES allow for a different position---as long as logic is associated with it.

With regard to temper vs. a cool head, that is a concern for me. I was inclined to this man as the next Sheriff, but I shall continue to monitor how he treats opposition. It is one thing to clam a faith and character---it is quite another to walk the walk.

I hope he takes to heart the sincere criticism. All I know is that we need Officers of the Peace over people who try to rule over any opposition with force.

I know you want to win in 2016, but you are picking a "contemporary ancestor" way of approaching it!!!

It seems the Civil War kinda proved whether there is States Rights or National Rights according to the US Constitution. We have NO MORE SLAVES, brother!!! The new slaves of 2014 seem to be those of the Reaganomics of VooDoo.

If you had half the brains of a Conservative, you would realize your issues is long past and discrimination is discrimination---no matter your skin problem or issue!

I, personally, don't approve of homosexuality, but some folks are just "bent that way." I would rather see them in a permanent relationship blessed by law than hiding behind buildings "trying to seduce children" --- which is another Conservative fantasy!!!!

All I can say is, "You would make a great Jew or Pharisee. You might find a real problem with Jesus." He said NOTHING about the issue so quit pretending he did.

Now I know what binds us, Stan --- shooting pics with telephoto lens! Years ago I was going to England for the first time and was fortunate enough to have a neighbor whose son-in-law was Church Wolf who owns Wolf Camera in Atlanta. I was lucky enough to get the "family price" on a Konica 35MM with a Sigma zoom lens included. If only anybody dealt with them anymore.

Anyway, we must now have a session with slides I shot of sights beyond compare in England, Europe, and N. Myrtle Beach. Of all I have shot, "The Girls of Myrtle Beach" is my favorite --- and before the itsy bitsy whatevers they wear today!

Someone called them "suit-less bathing straps!" I shall let you decide, my friend.

Each Candidate seems to follow a Party Line of Conservative vs. Liberal.

I am getting a LOT TIRED of such division without real legislation and budgeting that makes good sense.

In my view, the greatest problem we have in NC is Property Taxes which do not reflect actual resale values. Government does not seem to acknowledge that average citizens are getting by on less and they might just DO THE SAME!

When you visit the Legislative Building it is clear: "No Weapons Allowed." I hope the political "tongues used as swords" might become the same!

This HAS TO BE the 1 good thing we can say about politicians = make us laugh!

America is the only country I know with such disrespect as to elect someone one day --- and make them the butt of jokes the next. No wonder Castro emptied all the prisons in Cuba! A dose of Political joke-makers and pure criminals can't be beat.

Maybe the sharks should have eaten more food in the Cuban Straights!

I don't appreciate the pejorative terms used to describe voters from this most Conservative commentator. It is obvious the GREEDY B##T@RDS who make millions and raid corps and bank offshore needed the help far more than the poor in a formerly Progressive State!!! Maybe the Governor will send us some coal ash downstream from the mountains, here on the Pamlico River and Sound --- of Frack gases into our aquifers going after oil to pollute the air

Thanks for the details and rational assessment!

The figures and times show me clearly the battle of Conservative/Liberal ideology. I came to NC as a resident first in 1967. I was becoming a member of the student body at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest. I had just left GA with smile on face because Lester Maddox had become the Ultra-conservative Governor. I tuned in Channel 5 Raleigh and there was Jesse doing his editorial commentary. I could not help but say, "Lester has a political First Cousin in NC! OMG"

The real fight and money spent is over being Progressive or Regressive, in my view. GA got it's challenges with the unstoppable growth of Atlanta Metro. It also had a County Unit system of vote counting. In other words, whatever majority vote in any county was, the entire UNIT went to that party. Once the rural unit was deemed undemocratic, the popular vote began to run the elections. Conservatives in GA did not like it, but it changed the political color of GA.

Rapid change is hard to digest. Racial issues were grounded in such. Now Atlanta has become a great mixing pot Internationally. The hate over blocks of immigrants with foreign religions grows in Atlanta.

HATE and GREED are more the issues than political party, in my view.

We have to consider the Constitution stating: "Congress shall make no laws concerning religion." You are right about the nature of our dilemma!

A a member of Clergy, I consider my position as, not the Judge and Jury, but the one asked to "perform a ceremony." As much as I do NOT personally condone homosexuality, I must recognize that some folks are "made different."

Many hard-nosed haters of gays end up with someone in their family "coming out of the closet." When it becomes personal, I think AGAPE LOVE (unfailing good will) gets its supreme test. It is far more personal than any Marriage Amendment we might pass to stop it --- when God made them that way.

I have never faced this in my own family, but have acquaintances for many years who decided to be part of the gay world. They weren't being "flamboyant." They were just trying to be honest about their inner self.

The real legal issue here is Separation of Church and State!!!!

If we believe "no law shall be enacted regarding religion," then we should be restrained enough to NOT keep on trying to violate that constitutional matter.

The hate against same-sex couples is a Jewish thing from the Torah...if you check other religions and cultures of that day, you will find same-sex relationships existed ---- even if the Jews did not approve it.

Death and taxes seem to be part of life. Have you noted the difference between roads in NC and other states, though???

We have some excellent state 4-lanes which far exceed those of surrounding states. Our state is far bigger than SC and VA so we have that issue of more roads required to cross it.

I can live with our gas tax---as long as we see results. Using some of it to fund the budget as it relates to transportation IS FAR WISER than reducing taxes to the rich and corps so us working citizens now have an excess burden on personal income taxes

Personally---I am getting a lot tired of the new "PC at BCC!" Such foolishness is extending all over this state which grows the finest tobacco in the USA!

If it were not for tobacco money, BCC would probably not exist and certainly not have the amenities funded by farm families who contribute buildings and other stuff. If such iron-clad activities were really effective, Prohibition would still be in vogue.

When I visited the Open House at the Mormon Temple in Raleigh, they politely asked me to extinguish my pipe. It's a "religious thing" for them. This new excess in a society based on separation of Church and State, it's getting to be a "little much." Make that a "lot much!"

This is why Emory years ago decided to focus on academics and do minimal participation in sports. They do Soccer / swimming / and tennis, but that is about it. The connection with Georgia Tech recently with bio-technology gives us then chance to legally cheer for the Jackets!

Whenever I hear the post-game interviews with may star athletes, I cringe that so few can speak a correct and proper English sentence! High School kids are watching and not being inspired to be more than a hood in sports carousing his way through college!

I agree over the lack of real skills and thinking most students gain today---unless it is how to treat alcohol sickness after the weekend!

I was in college 1963-67 at Emory University. Their ideal was a Renaissance Man graduate. This meant "adept at looking beneath the surface and being inventive to make life better after your sojourn through it." I also note how many times an Emory Professor is sought for comment on important matters of Medicine / Science / Business / Law --- to cite a few. They also called Emory, "The Harvard of the South."

I know my 4 years were crowded with opportunities to examine my prejudices and preconceptions. The student-to-student dialogue bespoke the careful process of vetting us to matriculate.

I think the solution to a large part of the dilemma is that too many students are on a "happy holiday" at parent expense or some giant loan they might not be able to repay! I am of the opinion that college, done right, is not for everyone. It is far more than sports and parties, my friend.

A good early friend of mine is Joe Black. He was the recruiter for the giant Milliken Corporation in SC. It is a textile giant that is managing to keep on in a bad economy. Joe told me of trying to find employees who actually wanted to work. His solution was to begin recruiting ONLY students who were working their way through. They were proving a work ethic alongside their education!

Too many grads these days expect to be paid $60K up and enjoy their day in A/C comfort using a computer provided them for solitaire and Facebook! It is no wonder we are failing to compete in the world of production. The problem actually starts in lower education where you get passed through rather than have to learn proper English and Science along with Shop.

My education was equally at the end of a Trim Carpenter's hammer working with 2 master trim men who taught me their tricks of the trade. I value that learning and have saved much money in a do-it-yourself world of challenge. Thinking you have to hire any sweating job done is a major fallacy of our US society, in my view.

We are becoming a world of wusses as a result!
