What a wonderful opportunity Mr. Britt has opened up to readdress Al as the self serving boob he is.

Instead of lying low and letting the dust settle, Britt has put the target right back on Al.

For the next two years Al should be objective #1....If Jay reruns in 2014 then Jay and Al will be fighting for the Britt wing votes of the RINO party...while Ed Booth sweeps the Democrats and Stan works the right and middle.

Long story short, Al has no friends and even his old allies, i.e., Jay and Britt are now rivals.

Cost of Doing Business in Beaufort County is Electrifying
June 19, 2012 | 08:39 AM

With respect to discussions on the city council about utility rates versus customer usage: the electric rate is overwhelmingly important.

The point of generating electricity is to make the product affordable to consumers for a wide and growing number of uses. Lower rates encourage new commercial and residential users and greater economic development in the community being served. The single best indicator of economic well being in a modern community is strong and rising use of electricity.

Electricity rates are the "elephant in the room" concerning economic development in Beaufort County. Businesses are acutely aware of all manufacturing costs. They are already actively involved in restricting needless uses of electricity at their facilities. Plant managers, manufacturing process designers, selection of efficient machines and motors which are scaled to their best need all contribute to best use of only essential KWH useage. However, various manufacturing processes do have their own most efficient and particular basic KWH requirements and that cost is controlled only by the utility rate.

Our rates are an all prevailing hurdle to our local economy. New business is deterred from locating here. Old businesses are at a disadvantage to competitors being served by lower rate utilities. Residential customers need to direct dollars to utility bills which could go to home repairs. This results in a depreciating housing stock. The distortions to the local economy are all intrusive and pervasive. No amount of EDC scheming or industrial park nonsense can overcome the burden of utility rates. What new development does come to Beaufort County seeks out areas served by alternate power providers.

While it is a service to customers to educate users as to "smart use" strategies, it is not the government or the generating company's place to discourage usage. Discouragement of usage leads to two problems:

1) As utility usage falls the limited KWH hours generated and sold become less able to spread the fixed costs of plant and equipment across a broad sales revenue base. This causes the portion of fixed costs allocated per KWH to rise, this in turn requires moth balling plant and equipment or increasing rates.

..........this is a death spiral for business and for customers.

2) The logical progression for reduced customer usage through recommended thermostat settings, etc., is for the regulators to move into mandated temperature settings and then onto rationing. Regulation by central authorities replaces business and personal decision making

..........this is the death spiral of the business environment.

I just watched the city council addressed by Jim Chesnutt and Dot Mote. It is hysterical. Do these folks even believe this stuff themselves?

Mr. Jennings has rightly pointed out that planning needs a great deal more work than anecdotal meanderings about random data.

It is more of the same unsupported and imaginary correlations masquerading as "market studies and evidence" which led the EDC and C100 to propose industrial parks and Quick Start buildings. Notice that neither speaker made any reference to either project....better forgotten and avoided as embarrassing failures...$6,500,000 simply ignored and abandoned.

Just what is it that Mr. Thompson has laid as ground work for our future? Empty real estate? Debt? Higher taxes? $500,000 in clawbacks on grant guarantees?

After 10 years of sending $1,500,000 to salaries in Craven County, $6,500,000 to empty industrial parks and $4,000,000 to Committee of 100 favorites, the self-appointed leadership of economic development feels that Beaufort County and the City of Washington need a plan!

As to the regrettable "negativity"...what is more negative than selling of assets and reducing business exposure in a community?

National Spinning is actually divesting themselves of assets and financial exposure in Beaufort County, yet these same folks want taxpayers to accept the Committee of 100's "vision" for our future.

Mr. Thompson refused to even live here.

ARE THEY SERIOUS? You cannot make this stuff up.

At least 3 deer killed at night w/in 8 days, at SAME spot on west 5th street, close to PC Sound.
Within the last hour, I think abt 60 speeding cars have run over the carcass smearing it all over 5th street. Soon there will be nothing left of it but mush & crushed bones.
The cars are going 50 mph and so they cant see it in time to move over.

I think City of Washington may need a deer crossing warning sign here on west 5th street. Or... the NC transportation Dept should slow the traffic down. 50 mph speed limit here in the city limts is too fast here, where all these houses have tiny driveways, that ppl need to almost stop to turn into, is too fast.

We asked the NC dept of Transportation to slow the traffic, but they said the City of Washington didnt want it slowed.

We asked the city police to call someone to move it, the dispatcher told me the highway is not their jurisdiction.

At 50mph the deer are in danger from speeding vehicles, & the people are in danger too. 50 mph is too fast

Its all by design. Its been the Method of Operation by Cartels in Mexico for many decades... they kill the Mayors that dont play along, they kill the journalist that dont play along and they kill the cops that dont play along. Every citizen knows that if they complain, they can become a target. Its why we all use aliaes here.
Every 3rd world strategy that exists to control its people, is taking hold here in the USA. To be very frank, we cant fix NY, or CA or even the USA, but WeThePeople here in Washington might be able to stop the slide into a 3rd world corrupt town if we work together. That means keeping a meticulous watch over what our many town govt's in Beaufort County are doing. We have a sloppy, sloppy govt. Sloppy govts open the door to corruption, and/or HIDES it. Please citizens, use a critical eye and watch, make notes, speak about it.
P.S. I'm betting that the "self-righteous" 25 yr old Perreault is already imagining himself Governor one day.

The initial draft of the Constitution indicated "born a citizen" to be eligible for POTUS. John Jay (1st Supreme Court Justice) concerned that the requirement was not strong enough, and fearing that a member of the British Royal Family could become President, urged George Washington to change the language to "Natural Born Citizen." A natural American, is one who at birth, is a citizen of only one nation. NOT one born with dual citizenship as Nikki Haley was, at birth.

One doesnt need a degree to be a journalist.
All one needs, is to be hired as a journalist and just like that, YOU are a journalist.

If Stan hired you to report on news and current events locally for him, you'd be a journalist.

I want to thank Hood for all he does to protect the local taxpayers from wasteful spending. Its a good trait missing among so many other elected politicians.

I watched this Commissioners meeting, where Hood merely asked for a motion to provide direct hands-on oversight, by the County Commissioners of the budget, the spending, & the construction plans of the new school, so that unlike in the past, we wouldnt wake up one day with vast overspending, because those in charge hadnt provided for the parking lot, furniture and whatever. Isnt this the way a govt ends up with $500 hammers and toilet seats??

WHY WOULD those commissioners other than Stan, vote this motion down? WHY dont they want to protect the local taxpayers?
It sure seems to me that the majority who voted nay, would rather spoon with an alligator than vote for ANYTHING that Hood suggested.

That means that they arent on the side of the citizens, but rather are just shallow, useless, petty, govt pretenders.

Bob, if you think you are leading the local resistance by being a constant Troll on NOW, then you are really small potatoes. I hope you dont plan to write your memoirs on your time as a keyboard warrior for the losing side, in our insignificant online community.

Not an election analyst, but since no else has stepped forward, I'm going to speculate here anyway.

It appears that Washington has 2172 active voters out of a population of about 9,000. (I wonder how many of the 9,000 are children.)

It appears we have 1265 Democrat voters and 1265 GOP voters.
Since GOPers Ceres & Tex lost, it shows that the GOPers didnt choose them. The GOP mayoral candidate got 899 likely GOP votes. If those same voters had turned out for Ceres and Tex, they would have won.

Lou got 879 votes so it looks like the GOP did turn out for her.

Ellen w 747 votes likely got the city elite votes from the chamber of commerce crowd, both GOP and Dem.

Anyone else want to add their 2 cents worth?

The experienced powerplayers always make sure that no matter how many new ppl join an organization, the secret committee will always hold the power.
Many years ago a call went out for volunteers to come together to promote good things for the schools & students. After the introduction, they asked for volunteers to go sit at the table that best suited their personal goals. We did that. Shortly after a young woman with one of the elite surnames of the town came and sat with us, saying her name, and that she would be our chairman. I said "Hold on, dont we vote for our chairman?" She looked stunned and stated she was assigned to this position and knew nothing more. Sooo she was a puppet too. We had our meeting, but I didnt come back.
It appears this is the way the local GOP Party functions as well. Its full of "useful idiots" on the one hand and "powerbrokers" on the other. One then has to wonder, WHO are the local "powerbrokers" working for... those who are bosses above them?

Elected officials come & go but Bureaucrats R forever.
Each newly elected official is indoctrinated by th anonymous entity known as "the Staff."
I recall, calling our elected pple on an issue & being told by each: "I dont know I'll hav to ask th CityManager." So I decided, why waste my time on these City Council peope, I'll go straight to th CM. CM's love this. Its th point that a CM knows that he's th boss (by popular opinion), NOT THE COUNCIL. The Council has been neutered. As th system exist, I suspect this happens EVERYWHERE! Parts of this is why pple dream of term-limits. They know th inner workings R rotten & need a new awakening. That's also why we cant bring back Sadler. He was a rubberstamp for "the STAFF, as much as anyone. So HOW do we find a
replacement for Fritz who isnt a rubberstamper, treehugger, a butter-my-breader & worse yet, what th insiders call "a teamplayer."
The last policeChief was demoted. Yet th CM called hm a team-player. What does that mean? Follow th $.

IMHO the people of Washington have been asleep for decades, maybe even a century.
I think "stirring the turd" is waking people up. They are opening their eyes and seeing that this isnt the 1950s any longer. General politians, bureaurcrats, and low-lifes in general have a quiet motto..."I've got to get mine." Yeah I saw that on a T shirt a couple decades back. There appears to be a sloppiness in life AND Govt the world over. Its how we end up with corruption and high taxes.
I know Govt monthly meetings can be boring as C-span, but WeThePeople must make it a part of our life, that we read the agenda, watch the meetings & keep a watch on all the Depts & Committees of the city. Remember "term limits?" We have a man who has been on a powerful city Board for 35 yrs. How does one do that? I think that they prove they are a "government team player." They dont rock the boat, they go along with what the Dept heads want. Let's Be observant.

Does anyone know? Why was last police chief demoted?

If you hand over ALL this information about yourself, you are naive.

Beaufort County is implementing a new emergency alert system. All residents are encouraged to sign up to receive alerts via phone and email:
Enter your phone number(s) and email address(es).
Provide an address to receive alerts for a specific location.
That could be your home address, your workplace, your child's school, a family member's house or another area.

Corruption doesnt have to continue. We the local people can all be watchdogs over the City Council and City manager activities. We dont have to go back to sleep regarding city issues.

Even just a week before the election most conversation here was about National and Global issues. Our hair should have been on fire about local issues...but it wasnt.

In addition: I would like to see an analysis of the voter turnout. For example how many registered voters of each party sat it out.

Agree with most of your analysis. I think the interesting thing right now is the list of frontrunners for the GOP. You've got "the Donald", Cruz, Carson, and Fiorino. Three are non-politicians and the only politician is a non-establishment man. I thought that Bush and Rubio were thrown softballs in this debate by Fox. I was disappointed we didn't see a lot of policy discussion on immigration, Obamacare, the Iran deal, etc... Just a whole lot of "gotcha" questions unless your name was Rubio or Bush. The treatment of Carson, Walker, Cruz and Paul as a whole was to marginalize them. As far as Megyn Kelly goes, I used to watch her show...the key being used to...I think she was too biased and too busy trying to make herself look good.

Well written and well thought, Stan. Sadly, 9-11 did not receive any special observance in our schools either. My grandson recently led a charge to have the Pledge of Allegiance as a fundamental part of the school day, and the BOE has implemented it as policy, but observance is scattered among instructors.
