Manhattan Institute's Copland details growth in new crimes

RALEIGH - North Carolina's criminal code is 55 percent larger than Virginia's and 38 percent larger than South Carolina's, and the Tar Heel State has created nearly three dozen new crimes each year over the past six years.

The growing number of crimes has led to special challenges for small business owners and entrepreneurs, according to the Manhattan Institute report "Overcriminalizing the Old North State."

James Copland, senior fellow and director of MI's Center for Legal Policy, shared key themes from the report during a speech Monday to the John Locke Foundation's Shaftesbury Society. In the video clip below, Copland focuses on recent growth in the number of state crimes.
