University of Richmond changes name of law school, family demands $51 million back

ENCNow

Thomas C. Williams attended Richmond College in 1846 and was later a trustee of what became the University of Richmond.  He made many contributions to the school and in 1920 the university's law school was named in his honor the T.C. Williams School of Law.  Now the university's trustees have removed his name from the law school saying he once owned between 25 and 40 slaves, although demands from the family for proof of that have gone unanswered by the university.

Now the family says that if their ancestor's name is not good enough for the University of Richmond, neither is his money.  They have calculated the value, with interest, of his donations and have demanded the university return to them $51 million.

I keep waiting for Yale University to change its name. Its namesake, early benefactor Elihu Yale, was both a slave owner and a slave trader, and as a British colonial official was responsible for changing the law to end a ban on exporting slaves.

Elihu Yale was much more bound up in slavery than any of the people who are being cancelled in the South.
