Right continues to lead for snap Spanish parliamentary election in July | Eastern NC Now

Socialists sue pollsters

Spain's governing Socialists, rocked by a significant victory of the parties of the right in Spring's local elections, called a snap national parliamentary election in July, bringing forward the election that had been scheduled for November.  By putting the election during the summer vacation season, they thought that might give them an advanrage.

Polls are continuing to show a strong lead of the conservative parties, with the traditional conservative Popular Party the top party in Spain, and the populist / nationalist anti-immigration Vox Party also running strong as well.  The Socialists have responded by filing a lawsuit against three news outlets which ran polls and the polling firms that conducted them.

The Popular Party has signalled that it intends to form a coalition government with Vox, as it already has in a number of provinces and cities..  The anti-tax Citizens Party, has faded with most of its vote going to the Popular Party.

Concern has been raised, ironically by a Socialist mayor, of the possibility of election fraud due to Spaniards on vacation entrusting their votes to mail-in ballots, with the head of Spain's post office being a Socialist activist.

The Socialists main coalition partner, the far left Podemos party is collapsing in the polls with several new parties on the left seeking to replace it.  One, the Frente Obrero, will be interesting to watch, as it combines old school working class advocacy with populist ideas such as staunch opposition to illegal immigration, support for patriotism, and opposition to wokeness.  Its leader is an ex-Communist but most of the party is not.
