The Republican primary for Congress in the First Congressional District, of which Beaufort County is a part is looking close, according to the latest poll from Emerson College.  The poll shows Laurie Buckout leading at 26%, closedly followed by Carteret County Sheriff Asa Buck at 22%.  State Senator Bobby Hanig is at 16%, and Lenoir County Commissioner Eric Rouse at 5%.

Under the new 30% threshold to avoid a runoff, if any candidate gets 30% of the vote, they will be the nominee.  Otherwise, there will be a runoff among the top two.

Buckhout has been somewhat controversial over getting out of the race and then back in, only living in the district for two years before her first campaign, and from some of those financially backing her.  Sheriff Buck has emerged as her closest competitor.

That absurd 30% threshold to avoid a runoff means we need to look at tactical voting in this primary. I have been a supporter of Senator Bobby Hanig who has been the only conservative in the state senate with a set of gonads. However, who we absolutely do NOT need is carpetbagging loser and special interest hack Laurie Buckhout. It looks like the best way to stop her, given the lay of the land, is changing to vote for Asa Buck.
