The Bottomless Depths of Scripture

When I was a boy, there was a long, winding creek not far from our home where boys from our little community often swam in the summer. Most of the creek was shallow enough to wade through without difficulty, but there was one place unlike all the others.

Could the UFO Craze Be Preparing the World for a Great Deception?

In recent years, governments around the world, including the United States government, have changed how they talk about UFOs. Officials now often call them UAPs, or “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena.” Congress has held hearings, and military videos have been released. Former intelligence officials have claimed that some objects appear to move in ways beyond known human technology.

HB 921 Would Dramatically Expand Alcohol and Normalize Gambling in North Carolina

Some weeks at the General Assembly are more discouraging than others, and this was one of them.

On Tuesday, I appeared before the House Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee to speak against House Bill 921, the “ABC & Gambling Omnibus Bill.” What began as a 19-page bill was replaced in committee with a proposed committee substitute that had grown to 76 pages, adding numerous provisions that would dramatically expand alcohol access, alcohol promotion, and gambling-related activity in North Carolina. The bill was scheduled for a discussion-only hearing this week, and a vote was delayed until a future meeting, which chairman Rep. Ray Pickett (R – Watauga) said would come soon.

Letter to NC House ABC Committee Members with Analysis of HB 921 – ABC & Gaming Omnibus Bill

I am writing to respectfully share serious concerns about H.B. 921 – ABC & Gaming Omnibus Bill.

Many of the measure’s provisions would substantially expand alcohol access, alcohol promotion, and the conditions that contribute to excessive drinking and alcohol-related harm in North Carolina. The bill also expands gambling-related activity by increasing game-night opportunities and loosening restrictions on 50/50 raffles. Taken together, these provisions move our state away from the principles of public control, public health, and community protection.
