Will Trudeau crackdown encourage separatists around Canada? | Eastern North Carolina Now

Canada has seen its share of separatist movements, and Trudeau's heavy handed attack on the Truckers may well encourage the growth of these movements.

The earliest separatist movement was in French-speaking Quebec where many supported independence from Canada just a few decades ago.  Since then, feelings had changed, with the current ruling party of the province supports maintaining Quebec's identity within Canada rather than independence.  However, they have been wary of Trudeau.  In the last national election, the Premier of Quebec openly urged voters in other provinces to vote Conservative because Trudeau was a threat to freedom.  When Trudeau announced use of the Emergencies Act,  not only did the Premier and his party openly oppose it, but so did the opposition group in the provincial parliament.  The party representing Quebec in the national parliament, the Bloc Quebecois voted solidly against Trudeau on use of the Emergency Act.  Trudeau's overreach may now be seen by the people of Quebec as a threat to themselves and may rekindle a desire for independence.

The other major separatist movement is of much more recent origin.  It is the Wexit (western exit) movement which seeks the separation of the western provinces, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, from Canada.  Its hot bed has been in oil-rich Alberta, where in the last two national elections, Trudeau's party failed to win a single seat in the national parliament.  In the last national election, many of the Wexit leaders pushed the new Maverick Party, but in the end many of their supporters stayed with the Conservatives for fear of splitting the vote and letting liberals in.  Most of the western provincial premiers openly opposed Trudeau's use of the Emergencies Act against the Truckers.  Many of Trudeau's leftward moves on things like guns and climate have angered many in western Canada who are adversely impacted by them.  In this region many feel increasingly under attack by the big city elitists of eastern Canada such as Trudeau.

Trudeau's action against the truckers may backfire by encouraging separatism across Canada.
