I just saw the POTUS speech in Argentina and I wish the hell that President Obama would stop telling me "That is not who we are". I am not too sure he has a clue on who we are much less who I am. Based on his lack of understanding on who the Terrorist are, it does not comfort me that he thinks he understands the founding principles of our country and why the USA is still one of the best examples of a republic based on the rule of law and not men.

I guess I am not the only one who has noticed President Obama's tendency to overuse this phrase. Check out this link for 46 repeats of the phrase.

Ted, thanks for this good article. These are some very thought provoking observations. Because Salvation is always a solitary conversion, I wonder if the mass communication model is more effective than the individual call to the altar in front of your friends and family that was in my old Baptist Church. Some of my best Christian role models were not found in the church but in daily life, but the small church was a great reinforcement environment for keeping the faith.

More attacks coming after biggest hacker breach in Apple app store

"Apple's (AAPL) iPhone app store was penetrated by hackers who infected hundreds of apps with malware -- including the Chinese version of Angry Birds 2 and WeChat -- but the malevolent programmers didn't actually crack Apple's security, they bypassed it".

I just uploaded a post on the maps of Vietnam. Surveying today I suspect is helped by GPS but still would require the good skills. One of my friends from Georgia Tech said the surveying final was a survey of the campus that the professor had been using for years. He gave you the start location and waypoints. If you ended up at his stop location, you passed. My friend said the system was flawed since the expressway next to GT had changed some of the points. He submitted his final point at the Varsity Drive in, which was just on the other side of the expressway and the professor gave him a passing grade since the test was so outdated. Here is crude example of the joke.

Stan, I would love to see some of your work, if you still have them.

There are maps and there are maps. Here is a map of one of our Base Camps in Vietnam which I think was drawn by our resident artist, Wild Bill Hauser (I Could be incorrect here as memory is faded). This was drawn free hand using the topo maps of the Army as a guide. He drew it after he returned from Vietnam based on memory and consultation with others.

He drew caricatures of most of the guys in the unit, but unfortunately, I lost mine during the years of denial and repressed memories.

There is also a map of Cu Chi and Nui Ba Den, which was much more detailed and based on some Army maps. Some would ask how one would remember such things? The best way to cement something in memory is to attach some emotional baggage to the memory. Think about your childhood neighborhood, I'll bet most could sketch the two mile radius without consulting a map.

Naturally, the Army in all its wisdom decided that Wild Bill was more valuable as a grunt than a mapmaker or cartoonist.

Thanks for keeping this article and video in the high rotation queue. It is important in this election year that we distinguish the difference between Capitalism and the perverted version that we have allowed our Government to create: i.e. Crony Capitalism. Any preference from the government is a direct subsidy taken from taxpayers and given to business or individuals.

This is true if it is the Mortgage interest deduction, the $50,000 small business credit that was eliminated, or the favorable tax treatment used to encourage business relocation.

In a system where there is a balanced budget required, any preferential treatment to one entity is paid for by the rest of the taxpayers. Most states require a balanced budget. In the absence of a balanced budget requirement, the price is paid by the society as a whole with increased debt used to finances government efforts to select winners and losers.

It may be automated calligraphy but it somehow does not seem as inspiring as the master does with his pen and ink. I spent most of my working life selling automation products to improve productivity and efficiency, but I always admired the skill of a real craftsman practicing his trade.

Sometimes progress can be effective in reducing cost and increasing productivity but regressive in its disregard of the dedication of skilled craftsman as shown in the above article.

Below is the indifference of automation that accomplishes a purpose but loses something in the process. From the Gutenberg printing press to this simple printer show below in the 1:/12 minute video, we have managed to create efficiency but I hope that we will always have room for the skill set required to design and implement uniqueness in some works of art.

Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm had a contentious relationship after the breakup of the Band. Robbie was the creative seed and Levon probably resented it. When someone asked Robbie about the break of up of the band much later, he made the following comments:

---on whether fame was a contributing factor to his breaking up with The Band -----"It's hard to be clairvoyant enough to see if things would've been different. In the beginning, you're all single and in it together. You mature in different directions. Everybody grows in their own way. And so you start seeing things through different lenses".

---on making music in the late seventies----"A lot of people at that time went into this tunnel of insanity and decadence and self-abuse, and didn't come out the other end. It was a rugged and ragged journey". IDMB MOVIE DATABASE

My excuse is that I always try to write and talk in the language of my audiance and that means poor grammer, poor speelling, poor puntciation because that is how most of my three friends can understand it.

I once asked my spouse, mate, companion, partner to proof one of my posts for grammar, spelling and clarity. She read two lines and put it in the shredder. I have been on my own ever since.

Sabe, you have discovered at a young age what took me quite a few years to reconcile. Beware of ideologues of any persuasion, they are blinded by their own prejudices but often profess to be open-minded. Age brings on hardening of the attitudes as well hardening of the arteries. On the other hand, moderates may be more dangerous because they are too lazy form an opinion. Riding down the middle of the road is a sure fire prescription for a head on collision with reality.

Strong opinions are the lifeblood of taking control of your course, but they need to be re-examined occasionally to be sure they are still valid. Your internal compass needs re-calibration every so often and you are already well aware of the pitfalls of blindly following dogma. Utopia does not exist in this world and as Hamlet would say: ay, there’s the rub!

My current home is about 45 miles up I85 northeast of Atlanta and I guess would be considered as a growth area. Two exits up I 85 to the north from mine is still rural Jackson County with population density was 178.1 inhabitants per square mile and two exits down I85 South is the Mall of Georgia with congestion and Gwinnett County with a population density of 1,871.2 inhabitants per square mile

The political mix is about 80% Republican based on the 2012 election results. I also have a condo in Decatur, Ga which is the melting pot of Liberalism and is about 80% Democratic based on the 2012 election.

My circle of acquaintances is not too political active without any big axes to grind but mostly lean toward conservative. I think it is fair to say that many do not like Obama based on a mix of policies and some simmering bigotry. Decatur on the other hand is just the opposite with most loving the President's policies and accusing everyone who does not as bigots. The difference being that my conservative friends usually believe in the "live and let live philosophy" while my liberal friends believe that you are brain damaged and dangerous if you don't subscribe to their "circle of tolerance" for all things liberal.

Given our history of oppression of blacks and gays, I think the pendulum has swung to the far left in today's political climate. It just proves human nature is content with their prejudices as long as they have an adequate support group. Our College campuses and enclave neighborhoods are divided into groups of like minded people. It seems we have never learned to just tolerate others opinions. If you use the definition of bigot as a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions, both sides are about equal in their disdain for opposing views.

Similar to the segregation and Jim Crow laws of the 1950s, now the progressives (i.e. Liberal =same) want to use the same power of government to force their opinion and laws on others. Human Nature has not changed a bit since the beginning of time.

I fault the breakdown of the family unit for most of this lack of respect for others but I freely admit that our higher learning institutions are populated and controlled by far left leaning professors who are more interested in indoctrination than education.

Interestingly enough these Universities exist under the protection of non-profit entities, which abuse the students with higher, and higher tuition while amassing large grants and endowments that are used for everything but education. The entire student loan program is a rip-off to transfer money from the students to the universities and then blame the working society for the problems of overburdened debt.

Sorry, I need to get back to my minimalist primer before I continue with this comment.

Alice: I don't much care where.

Well Said Stan.

Nancy Davis Reagan saw her job primarily as the support foreman for her elected husband. She was strong woman who had her own views of policy and had no problem voicing them. Ronald had many detractors who saw him as a puppet and only as an actor only reading the words of others. Those detractors no doubt have never read any of the diaries or letters he wrote as well as his speeches written in long hand before he became president. Without a doubt in my mind, Nancy gave him the strength and support for him to implement his policies. Any man, president or janitor who has a partner like Nancy who will tell him the truth and watch his back from the countless Young Cassius wannabes, is well served. We should all be so fortunate to have a partner who will unflinchingly support her husband through thick and thin as well as near death assassination attempts.

Politics is a rough game and she proved that Harry Truman was wrong when he said, "You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog". You need a wife who will protect you from your own weaknesses and if she occasionally needs the support of an astrologer or prayer, who are we to judge.

May she Rest in Peace with President Ronald Reagan.

It does appear that the die has been set unless there is some major reworking of the conventional selections of a candidate. Our constitution will be trampled regardless if it is Hillary or Trump. Neither has shown me any respect for the rule of law and both seem to be capable of playing the system for their own purposes, but that is common to plenty of politicians.

I still await the playout of the final primaries but I must also prepare myself to vote for the lesser of two evils. The fact that Trump has usurped the talking points of the conservative movement and attracts the legions of followers, makes me reevaluate the common sense of the voting public. I am a bit dismayed that the frustration level has risen to the point that a man totally devoid of character is considered for President. It appears that the end does justify the means.

There is apparently a legal way to obtain the information from this IPhone but I have my concerns on the basic premise of the government forcing the manufacturer to provide a mechanism to defeat one of its features. That makes the manufacturer responsible for the use of something that is nothing more than a tool. Many will interpreted my opinion as opposed to breaking into the phone. That would be incorrect; I am more concerned about the principal. If there is data on that phone that is relevant to future actions, I am sure it will have been altered or changed by the potential terrorist because it is compromised.

What would be next, knifes, scissors, or rocks. There is a parallel to the torture of prisoners to gain information. No matter how important the information is the end may not justify the means without full due process under the law.

It is not a small step after that to require the gun and ammunition manufactures to be responsible for the use of their product. I am in 100% percent support of cracking the IPhone but it should not be the responsibility of the manufacturer to provide the mechanism.

I am sure there is enough hackers around who could jailbreak this phone and like I mentioned below, the Chinese may already have methods at hand defeat any encryption.
I pay close attention to the legal arguments regarding this as opposed to the emotional appeals about the possible outcome. We are on slippery ground when we bend any constitutional prohibitions in the name of safety.

Maybe we can get Diane Rufino to weigh in on this matter.

I was just watching the replay of the NASCAR race in Atlanta this past weekend. When they interviewed the winner after the race, I had an epiphany. It was The Donald. Here is a partial transcript of the interview in the Winners Circle.

"Well, we had a tremendous crowd that came to see me win this race. I was amazing the whole race. Most of the fans in the stands were there to see me and no one else. The other drivers could not get a phone booth full if they had to. I was so dominant that they should have just quit the race. I built this track and made the fans pay for it. That number 88 never had a chance. Did you see the way he choked when I passed him on the backstretch? Number 18 was scared to death when he saw me in his mirror. I know I could have done this alone but I want to thank the illegals that I had on my crew in the pits. They were able to change the tires and refuel me just like I hired them to do. They are on their way back to Mexico until nest week".

It was then that I woke up and realized that I had drifted off during the replay. I may be watching too much Fox News.

I also saw this film (Ain’t in It for My Health: A Film About Levon Helm), and I recommend it to any who had a love of the Band. I do not know what the lessons of the documentary are. I do know it is well worth watching if for no other reason to gain a better understanding of the man and his music. He had a great life and lived it to the fullest, but I doubt if he ever found peace with the fact that he and the others could live it but it took Robbie Robertson to write it. It was truly a sad commentary on a life of excess but it was his choice and that is as it should be.

Here are some quotes from a review of the film:

"Rock ’n’ roll takes a lot out of those in the profession, few more so than the members of the legendary group the Band. Their first releases “Music From Big Pink” and “The Band” rank 34th and 45th, respectively, in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 best rock ’n’ roll albums of all time, and the Martin Scorsese documentary “The Last Waltz”, about their final performance, is among the best concert films ever made.

"But tragedy has been the lot of most of them. Richard Manuel committed suicide in 1986 at the age of 42; Rick Danko died of heart failure in 1999 at the age of 56. And Levon Helm, shrunken and ghost like in the bittersweet, frustratingly impressionistic documentary has, over the years, battled bankruptcy, illness, and heartbreak".

Here is some more ideas for thought. The Iphone is made and assembled in China. The CPU used in the IPhone is designed by Apple but built and assembled in China. It would be easy to hardwire a backdoor in the CPU that can bypass the security of the operating system. I am way out of my element here but I have found that for every software problem there is a solution. One of the few things I trust less than my own government is the Chinese government. It is possible that they have already hardwired a backdoor into the chips that they can access at will by a special security code only they know.
There are two arguments here in my mind.
1) Does the American Government have the right to require a private company to create a bypass for a product they created when one of it's major selling features is an encryption of the data and security from hackers? One of Steve Job's pet believes was that the IOS is closed sourced. Only approved applications can be loaded on an Iphone where as Android and Windows are open sources with the operating system subject to manipulation.

2) Has there ever been any system that is not breakable?

Just because I am paranoid, blah, blah, blah. See the link below on the Manufacturer of the Iphone chipset.

For those who enjoy short quizzes to pick a candidate, here is a fairly unbiased quiz to help. Be sure to check the show more questions under each heading. It expands to a more detailed in depth analysis of your views.

But, I caution the results are based on the questions asked and your answers. Like all polls and surveys, it is the questions not asked that can affect the outcome dramatically

When something is free, by definition it's value is zero. It took me a while to understand that I did not know it all but thankfully, a few failures in life pointed the way.

While I am not opposed to higher education, I wonder how it really makes us all better citizens when we have probably the highest percent of college graduates we have ever had and the country is still in this mess. (If you don't think we are in a mess, that is your right and proves my point, I think?????) Check the numbers.

For a while, I was a partner in a loan business after retirement. We placed liens on the Auto loan title. Once a week we had to go to the tag office in Dekalb County Georgia to file the liens. We completed the paper work before going. All the clerks had to do was just to stamp the receipt date and time with a time clock and accept the check for the lien fee.

There was a large computer generated sign that said something to the effect of:
"Do not talk on your cell phone while we are processing your paperwork".

Inevitable the clerks would be talking on their cell phone the whole time they processed the lien paperwork. We did not dare complain because your lien would be mysteriously lost during processing which required you to resubmit. Our policy was to have three signed copies of the lien agreement from the customer in case the paperwork was lost. I do not think the back of the sign had the same wording.

No smiles, no thank you, no kiss my grits. Just take a number and wait for your number to be called.

It probably does not make any difference now. These primaries are just to set the starting field. The race does not start until November. I can never decide what I am going to eat in a buffet until I get to the main entree and see how it looks, but I admit, I sometimes get in line with one specialty in mind.

At Matthew's in Tucker it comes at the front of the line while I am still hungry and not full.
