Families can be Difficult ...
They also can be one's strength to weather the certain difficulties in life that test any resolve for happiness. "The Descendants" is that film which reveals both sides of that certain coin - that life is precious and messy, and must be lived with the knowledge of the inevitable eventuality that befalls each of us. Maybe we should mind our way down that path and keep those messes in small, manageable piles. "The Descendants" is a film about those who have n... (read more)

Could You Draw Us in a Bit Closer?
Even though this film has its comedic moments, Cancer is a serious subject, so you best bring your "big boy pants" to watch this one. Regardless, as your friendly, neighborhood reviewer, you should take my professional opinion on this well paced 100 minute movie: You should see this film. The life of 27 year old Adam, played so well by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is a most unpretentious, quirky world that Director Jonathan Levine shows us by virtue of Screenw... (read more)

Publisher's note: Chapter VIII is the continuation of a series that began with The Turnage Theater in Images: a Retrospect in Melody - Chapter I, with the last installment in the series, The Turnage Theater in Images: a Retrospect in Melody - Chapter VII.
These chapters of the Turnage Theater, in retrospect, in these rare images offered below, are in chronological order, and if you do not see a show that you were particularly fond of; please, be aware of this one policy of mine - I did not pub... (read more)

Now in its 4th year, it's time again for DANCING WITH OUR STARS!
This year is sure to continue the tradition and fellowship of Eagle's Wings, Janet Cox and Le Moulin Rouge de Danse, and the entire community of Beaufort County. Every year progresses into a program that is sure to entertain. With the tremendous success and support we got last year, we've put together a whole new show that features many new groups of dancers all working to raise awareness and money for the mission of Eagle's W... Somebody's Laughing

Irrespective of any political message inherent within the commercial, Chrysler's "It's Halftime in America," featuring Clint Eastwood, was most notable on two fronts: It was by far the most successful ad aired during the Super Bowl XLVI, and Clint Eastwood can still command our attention.
Even recently, I was asked my opinion by facebook friend Janine Turner (remember the unforgettable Maggie O'Connell) on this Eastwood ad, which I astutely retorted: "Yeah, I liked it, but then again, I like C... (read more)

Just today, November 17, 2011, I am witness to those zany Target commercials, with the maniacal Black Friday shopper for the 3rd year now, and I'm still laughing. Maria Bamford really cracks me up.
Maria is a rare, matchless woman, with a bizarre sense of funny. Her comedy is an eclectic blend of total shock, with a sincere sense of the genuine expression of all that fills her ego - an ego that teeters wildly on her personal axis of weird. Hunter S. Thompson once, inadvertently, so famous... (read more)

Art as a Philosophy
|
What is Normal? And Where Do I Run To It?
Yes, it is a Syndrome, and it influences what passes for art in our world growing smaller. You might ask: What is the "Rachel Getting Married" Syndrome? Well it is complicated, and it will need more time than I have at this sitting to develop what will be an ongoing thesis. I will, however, find the time to expound on the subject, but I honestly believe it may be deeper than the “Rabbit Hole” from “Alice’s Adventu... (read more)

Galleries and Exhibits

Publisher's note: Beaufort County Now, ever slow and steady, will begin the process to bring to you the winners' names of these works of art in this show. I took pictures of some of the work, but time was fleeting that night of the first exhibit, and I found no time the next day to take pictures of all the works of the winners, before I was called out of town.
If I am unable to make images of the other winners, and if you (artists) want to have your work exhibited for near perpetuity on Be... (read more)

Now an official downtown-Washington success, Lone Leaf Gallery & Custom Framing, celebrated its one-year anniversary yesterday evening with hors d’oeuvres, drinks and a new art exhibit, ‘Interruptions’ by Ben Isburg. From 5 to 8 p.m., dozens of loyal patrons and supporters stopped by the gallery to congratulate the Loughlins and see the show.
After a shaky, but well intentioned, version of 'Happy Birthday', Neil and Meredith Loughlin, owners of Lone Leaf Gallery & Custom... (read more)

Publisher's note: This film short, "Detective's Story," is the inaugural post for this new category that I pray will serve as a benefit to young filmmakers, needing a hand up. Beaufort County Now is a large, well integrated platform, with bold, and increasing traffic numbers. We should be of some help here.
We welcome all young filmmakers, actors, all manner of creative folk for their submissions. We're here to help. I made this short film for Ken Wyatt’s Advanced Post Production Technique... (read more)
