Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation | Eastern NC Now

Reflect upon these words when you are told that our founders were not Christians

In the middle of the American Civil War (which lasted from April 12, 1861 – May 9, 1865), Abraham Lincoln, at the age of 54, invited all Americans to celebrate Thanksgiving on the same day, wherever they were in the world. Prior to this, Americans celebrated Thanksgiving but the exact date varied from state to state and community to community. Now, after Lincoln's proclamation, the United States continues to observe "the last Thursday of November... as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens."
