Legislature Extends Tax Filing Deadline for Farmers and Fisherman to April 15

Raleigh, NC – Today the members of the North Carolina legislature voted to extend the tax filing deadline for farmers and fisherman to April 15th.

Normally farmers and fisherman who do not choose to pay estimated income tax quarterly they must have their total taxes paid by March 1st, but North Carolina Department of Revenue has had a delay in beginning to process returns due to the state budget having been passed so late and updates needing to be made to the tax processing software. The NC Department of Revenue expects to begin processing returns on February 28th which is a day before the normal deadline for farmers and fisherman to have taxes filed.

With the passing of House Bill 797, farmers and fisherman will have now have until April 15th to file and pay their full taxes for the 2021 year to avoid a penalty.

“With the N.C. Department of Revenue’s processing software being updated and the date for them to begin the expected date for the start of processing returns being February 28th it is only right to offer extra time for these citizens to file.” said Rep. Keith Kidwell (R-Beaufort, Craven). “I am proud to have supported this bill that will help hardworking North Carolinians make sure they have enough time to get their taxes done with no penalty.”
