A double rainbow appeared in the sky as crowds of people gathered outside Buckingham Palace awaiting news of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's health. Shortly after, on Thursday, September 8, it was announced that the Queen had died at the age of 96.

Crowds had flocked to central London to get updates on the longest-reigning monarch's health. Then at 6:30 pm local time, the Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth had "died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon."

"The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow," the update continued, referring to Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

People were aware on Thursday that the Queen's passing could be imminent. "Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision," a spokesperson from Buckingham Palace said earlier on Thursday. "The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral."

The queen's family, including Prince Charles, his wife Camilla, and the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, reportedly rushed to the queen's bedside upon hearing about her failing health. Prince Harry also allegedly flew to Balmoral but his wife Meghan stayed behind. The Duchess of Cambridge stayed at home as well to tend to her children as they had their first day at their new school.

Queen Elizabeth was the longest-reigning monarch in British history, with an incredible 70 years on the throne. She was well-liked by the people she served and worldwide thanks to her dedication to her station.

At the time of his mother's passing, Prince Charles, who immediately became king, issued a statement calling the queen's death "a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family."

He went on to say, "I know her loss will be felt deeply throughout the country, the realms, and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held."
