parliamentary election puts conservatives over centrists

ENCNow

The right has had three consecutive wins in a month in national parliamentary election in Europe.  Following victories by the right in Sweden and Italy, the right has now won in Bulgaria, with the traditional conservative GERB Party emerging as the largest party, replacing the centrist Change Continues Party.  GERB gained 8 seats to emerge with 67 seats while Change Continues lost 14 to emerge with 53.

The election also saw the recently organized populist nationalist conservative party Bulgaria Rise win 12 seats for its first time in parliament.  The Eurosceptic ultra-nationalist Revival Party more than doubled its representation from 13 seats to 27.

The Bulgarian Socialist Party dropped from 26 seats to 25.  The only other party to win any seats was the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, a coalition representing various ethnic minority groups including Greeks, Romanians, Serbs, and Gypsies.
