Negating governor's overreach - why we need a GOP sheriff | Eastern NC Now

It would have been very different for Beaufort County with a Democrat sheriff

ENCNow

The recent power grabs by Governor Roy Cooper in his Covid overreach illustrate the importance of having a conservative Republican sheriff who follows the Constitution not the whims of a power-obsessed governor.  Cooper grossly abused his emergency powers in his Covid lockdowns, acting without the concurrence of the Council of State as required by law.  Many Republican sheriffs, including Sheriff Ernie Coleman, stood up for citizens Constitutional rights and refused to enforce Cooper's lockdowns.  The same thing happened in other states around the country.

If we had had a Democrat sheriff, it would have been a different story.

That is particularly true with Corey Rogerson and his political debt to Herman Gaskins.  Gaskins always tries to be on the good side of Democrat governors, and he would have pushed Rogerson to knuckle under to Cooper's demands.

The only candidate we can depend on to be a Constitutional sheriff and stand up for Beaufort County citizens is Scott Hammonds.

I wouldn't trust Corey Rogerson any farther than I could throw Gaskins' tractor on immigration issues. I would not be surprised to see him do the Democrat thing on sanctuary counties for illegal aliens either openly like some, or quietly like other Democrat sheriffs.

We need a sheriff who will defend our gun rights, and Scott Hammonds is the only one we can count on for that. Rogerson had a big sign for gun grabber Supreme Court candidate Lucy Inman right beside his tent at the Board of Elections in a truck owned by his main money man the first week of the campaign. Then he moved the sign for the gun grabber across from his tent but still with a Rogerson sign on the tailgate. At best, Rogerson is indifferent to gun rights. He would not be a Constitutional sheriff. He would be a typical Democrat sheriff. It has been Republican sheriffs around the country who have been standing up for gun rights, NOT Democrats.

One RINO who needs to be gone is Frankie Waters. Waters is a Democrat in Republican clothing and has been since he switched parties just before running for commissioner. Waters has been a puppet on a string for Jerry Langley for years and is now going further to stab the GOP in the back by helping Rogerson. Waters is a collaborator with the Democrats and needs to be run out of office this election. Langley and Rogerson are both liberals, as Waters fundamentally is himself.

Having worked at high levels in politics for half a century, I have seen the influence of money on politicians. Some outright prostitute themselves to big contributors, but more often it is more a matter of buying access and influence. Major contributors will have their phone calls answered and their views considered by just about any politician. When I worked as a political appointee in Governor Jim Martin's administration, I was well aware that the governor's political consultant, Brad Hayes, kept a printout on his desk of all of Governor Martin's contributors that he looked at any time someone contacted him about pushing a proposal or a person. He also kept a printout of all the people who contributed to Martin's opponents. Brad drove to Raleigh once a week to work on policy and personnel and getting his support assured that something or somebody would get consideration. At the state level there were lots of "heavy hitter" contributors so the influence this brought was very spread out. With a local race, however, a single heavy hitter in a campaign can have a very outsized influence on the politician contributed to if they are elected. One must always look at the agendas of such major contributors because they would not have given that money if they did not think the politicians would adhere to that agenda.

So, in a race like our local sheriff's race, one outsized contributor is a concern, and when they are tied to other political forces so will be the politician they contribute to. The very strong willed might resist that influence, but many would not. If that contributor were also a "bundler", someone who also brought in contributions from others, their influence would be even heavier. This is absolutely NOT a good situation for Beaufort County.
