The U.S. Supreme Court has refused Gov. Pat McCrory's request to delay an injunction blocking several provisions in the 2013 election reform legislation known as VIVA - Voter Information Verification Act. Basically, the high courts opinion has North Carolinian's voting just as they did in 2012 and before.

This means that in the upcoming presidential election:

  1. voters will not need to show any form of ID to vote in North Carolina. In North Carolina a registered voter is only required to state a name and address in order to receive s a ballot.
  2. early voting is now extended to 17 days instead of 10 days,
  3. Same Day Registration is reinstated. In other words, people can register and vote at the same time during early voting. These voters' addresses are not required to be verified unlike voters who register ahead of time.
  4. and voters may vote in any precinct in the county where they are registered to vote on Election Day - not just the precinct where they are assigned.

It is being reported that the Supreme Court was split 4 - 4.
