The gas price war in Washington is BACK | Eastern NC Now

14 cent per gallon price cut at Murphy Express

ENCNow

Washington's gas price war is back with a vengeance with the leading price cutting station in town cutting 14 cents a gallon off of its prices for unleaded regular gas this morning.  Murphy Express near Wal-Mart cut its price per gallon from $3.09 to $2.95.  In the next block, Speedway was still at $3.09.  That big a price cut at one time is unusual.  The pattern has been for Murphy to knock a penny or two at a time off of the price and others to follow.

Speedway has been the leader in gas price increases, often ratcheting prices back up to Greenville levels in one fell swoop.  Sheetz has been a leader in increases a time of two and once lately, Duck Thru did so once.  The other station noted for cutting gas prices early has been Quality Plus.  Most other stations seem to be followers of what the price leaders are doing.

Speedway's ratcheting up the gas price to Greenville levels, $3.09, did not last long. They are now back down to $2.97. Some others, like Duck Thru seem to be slow in matching the lower prices championed by Murphy Express. It was good to see Murphy, after initially matching Speedway's $3.09, take their price back to $2.95 at one time, instead of their usual pattern of a series of one or two cent price cuts.

I remember the gas wars of the 60's. Of course back then gas was under 25 cents a gallon. They were still fun to watch.
Was out yesterday for a bit, when I went by Speedway at Tractor Supply gas was $2.96. When I went back by about 90 minutes later it has jumped to $3.09.
Having worked at a convenience stores years ago, the manager every week day would drive down the road and check the prices of gas stations near by. The prices would be reported on the daily report to corporate. If a station near our store was higher or lower it was not long before we got a call to adjust our price to meet the other store's price. Don't know if it still works that way or not.

As consumers, we need to reward those gas stations with a history of leading price cuts by doing our business with them and avoid those which lead in raising prices. Even when everybody has the same price, we should favor those who cut prices, not those who regularly raise them.
