Niger has “state-to-state” relations with Russia

ENCNow

Niger's ruling junta has ended an accord that allowed U.S. Department of Defense military personnel and civilian staff on its soil.

The decision follows a visit by U.S. officials.

Abdramane said the U.S. delegation did not follow diplomatic protocol, and that Niger was not informed about the composition of the delegation, the date of its arrival or the agenda.

Niger, along with neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso — which are also led by military juntas — has grown increasingly close with Russia, which has made concerted efforts in recent years to expand its influence in the region, especially via security partnerships. Niger has “state-to-state” relations with Russia, Abdramane said Saturday, adding that all agreements between the two countries had been made transparently.
