Crabs are latest victims of offshore wind turbines | Eastern NC Now

Seabirds, whales, dolphins also suffer

ENCNow

Industrialization of our oceans with wind turbines by self-described saviors of the environment never seemed to be actually beneficial to the environment, and as more studies come out it clearly is not. Offshore wind turbines have already been shown to be detrimental to sea birds, whales, and dolphins.

Now, a new peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering has shown that the underwater power cables that connect the wind turbines to the shore pose a danger to crabs.  The study focused on the Brown Crab which is commercially the most important species in Europe.  The electromagnetic fields created by the cables causes crabs to be attracted to cables and then remain motionless, and also causes a reduction of blood cells in their bodies making them more susceptible to disease.  The cables disrupt migration of male crabs which is important in crab reproduction.

The study was conducted by scientists from universities in Scotland and Hungary

Both Joe Biden and Roy Cooper are major advocates of offshore wind turbines, so the environmental threat of these things is quite real off of our coast.

It is not just wildlife who are victims of offshore wind turbines. Humans are also big victims through our electric bills. Offshore wind electricity costs a lot more than conventional electricity. The New York Daily News had a article earlier this year on a new contract between the Long Island Power Authority and an offshore wind electric producer where they were paying four and a half times as much wholesale for the wind energy as they were paying wholesale for conventional electricity. That gets passed on to the consumer in their power bills.
