They are both judges. Smith is a Superior Court judge in Union County. Byrne is an Administrative Law Judge in Wake County. Both types of judges hold court throughout the state. Smith was recruited by the NCGOP. Bryne decided on his own to run, and is endorsed by the Conservative Coalition of North Carolina.
